“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”
Booker T. Washington, Up From Slavery (1901)
My life journey has prepared me to be a caring and conscientious counselor, coach, and trainer.
In terms of academic and clinical training, I am trained in evidence-based practices for mental health intervention. I am an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University, in the Department of Psychiatry. I am simultaneously a researcher and clinician at the Kennedy Krieger Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress. I specialize in cultural intervention (www.poof-pullingoutoffire.com). I have a B.A. in Psychology, a Master's in Social Work, and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from UCLA. I have been licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 20 years, with many years of experience in mental health clinical practice and administration. For more information about my work, please visit www.drjspayne.com.
Spiritually, I am an Ordained Evangelist with the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) since 2002. Thus I am in tune with those who desire a counseling or coaching experience that takes their faith into account.
Most important, though, my life purpose is to help, empower, and strengthen, particularly oppressed populations and groups. If you need provision of (or referral to) culturally relevant emotional care, you are in the right place.
