“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”
Booker T. Washington, Up From Slavery (1901)
My life journey has prepared me to be a caring and conscientious counselor, coach, and trainer.
In terms of academic and clinical training, I am trained in various evidence-based practices for mental health intervention. I am an Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Psychiatry. I am simultaneously a researcher and clinician at the Kennedy Krieger Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress. I specialize in culturally-tailored intervention (www.poof-pullingoutoffire.com). I have a B.A. in Psychology, a Master's in Social Work, and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare from UCLA. I have been licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 20 years, with many years of experience in mental health clinical practice and administration. For more information about my work, please visit www.drjspayne.com.
Spiritually, I am an authentic Christian (with ministry experience since 2002). Thus I am in tune with those who desire a counseling or coaching experience that takes their Christian faith into account.
Most important, though, my life purpose is to help, empower, and strengthen -- particularly oppressed populations and groups. If you need culturally relevant emotional care, you are in the right place!
